The Cross

A reflection on sacrifice and redemption

Anne Emmerich wrote that she had a vision of Christs’ final days. She says that by the time Jesus arrived at Caiaphas’ for trial, He had already been beaten so severely that if there had not been angelic intervention, He would not have arrived alive.

This was just the start of His path of torture and before the trial.

Jeremiah Johnston PhD, says that He was then scourged with 700 lashes. 40 lashes was a death sentence.

By the time He arrived at Golgotha, He was no longer recognizable, no skin left on His back, lashes that had wrapped His entire body front and back bruising, tearing and ripping His flesh, organs exposed, bleeding from eye sockets, face disfigured and swollen, His head bleeding from the crown of thorns (2-4 centimeters long), beard and hair ripped out and shoulder and knee joints dislocated when elevated on the cross. Then the 7-9 in square carpenter nails pounded into the carpal tunnel area of His wrists and the top of His feet, at the ankle.

I grapple with the rapacious hatred poured out upon Him, that there can be hatred so consuming that compassion and pity have been erased in a human heart and soul, even railing expletives at Him as He hung pinned to a cross. I can’t wrap my mind around this fury, rage and hatred. How do you get there? Where does the heart and soul of a man go that can become transformed into THIS? I have an idea.

“For many He became an object of horror; many were astonished at Him. His face and His whole appearance were marred more than any man’s, and His form beyond that of the sons of men.” Isaiah 52:14 (AMPC)

We have a sanitized version of Christs’ suffering and horror, with the often displayed intact image purported to represent Him nailed to the cross.

By the time He arrived at Golgotha, He should have already been dead, given just the shear amount of blood loss, BUT He wasn’t.

Why? Because He CHOSE willingly to stay alive, willing His body to endure, facing the suffering, torture and horror of the cross because He knew He was the ONLY one who could, (as the holy one of God, His Son), conquer sin and death that had permanently separated us eternally from God.

Yet … this was not finished. Every SIN known to humanity entered His destroyed body. He experienced every form of depravity, hate filled rage and debaucherous evil. He now knows all of what we experience here, what we possess in our hearts and what assails us. He has become our intercessor before His Father, our advocate, because He can explain us, our trials and temptations.

But, unimaginably, this wasn’t His final blow! If you can believe this. His final and worst torment was when sin entered Him and His Father turned away, because sin cannot dwell in the presence of Almighty God.

Separated from His Father. Jesus was now totally alone.

The Trinity separated! When in all Creation had THIS ever happened?

It is said that only love for us kept Him alive, willingly allowing Himself to be pinned to that cross … think on this.

He told Peter that night in the garden when Peter drew a sword in defense of Him. …

“Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall at once give Me more than twelve legions of angels?” Matthew 26:53

At any time Jesus could have ended His torment, summoned the almighty power of heaven. He didn’t.

But, He needed death on the cross? It was the most heinous form of death in the Roman Empire, relegated to the worst of humanity. Jesus?

I believe part of this may be because there is now no claim anyone can make that claims any suffering or horror exceeding what Christ suffered. We cannot say to God that He does not understand us, or what we had experienced was worse than Jesus’ suffering, and use that as an excuse that allows us access to heaven. Now there can be no exceptions, excuses. God is just.

God cannot allow any argument professing any right to access heaven that circumvents His son. There IS only ONE entry pass … belief in Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord.

And then the cosmic nuclear event, resurrecting Him! Rising from the grave as a Victorious Conqueror, the Savior of mankind, restoring to us access to a heavenly eternal future through the remission of our sins! What a spectacular image!

John 3:16

“16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Do you know Him?

Do you know He is coming very soon?

If you do not and are ready …

Sinners prayer:

“Father God, I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe He came, lived, died and was resurrected to redeem us from sin. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and ask You to forgive my sins and come into my heart. Amen”

Then:

Feed your new spirit with the Word (Bible). Suggest starting with the Gospel of John. Pray all day, it’s just converation, talking to Him like you talk to anyone, spend time thinking about Him. He will come alongside you. Promise. And don’t get discouraged. The road isn’t easy but worth it.
